I have a 1 yr. old Yorkie & my new roomie has a cat. Will they kill eachother & how to familiarize the two?

The dog keeps trying to get the cat to play and instead the cat hisses and raises it's paws; and she's not declawed. I'm scared I'm going to come home to dead animals.
