Hamas: A Humanitarian Organization??? Hamas's difficult position?
Hamas can be thought of as immature, or perhaps schizophrenic. The potential is there for it to become a legitimate player, but potential is not reality. Hamas would indeed be a legitimate player if they were working towards a two-state solution, and some of them are. But explicit in the basic charter for the organization, and innate in the belief of many of its members, is a rejection of that solution in any form. That being the case, we may choose to support Israel's military action against Hamas or not, but we certainly must understand that they have limited options. It's especially hard to criticize Israel for not doing more in terms of the details of developing a two state solution when those it would work with reject the entire concept out of hand. Negotiation is wrong, since under current cirstaces it can only be talk without a potential solution; persistent pressure, mostly political but not ruling out military, is unfortunately all that's left.
