Can Grinding Cause Severe Pain? Dentists?

Just curious if grinding or clinching your teeth can cause serious throbbing pain? Because of on going toothpain i've had I have been monitoring myself the past two days. I noticed I clinch REALLY hard and grind only on my left side where a molar sticks up a little high on one side. This is the side I have had so much pain with. Some of the pain I notice is throbbing but not severe, aching, and sometimes the cold effects the area. The cold sensitivity could be my deep cavity (getn filled on Friday), or my gum from my temp crown. I am really wondering now if I am causing all this pain. It's severe sometimes and my dds still can't figure it out. I'm going to try a night guard for a few nights and see what happens. So is it possible for clinching and grinding to cause so much pain? Dentists can you help? Thanks.
